The first act is entirely concerned with presenting the story as a supernatural “whodunit”. The story is broken into three Acts, each divided by the physical placement of the player in the house. The scraps of information you find around the house suggest all sorts of things: The father is an unsuccessful writer turned alcoholic, the mother is having an affair with a coworker, the ghost of the previous owner Uncle Oscar is seen and heard haunting the house, and most terrifyingly your sister Sam has gone missing and her dead body is most likely rotting in the attic. I refused to believe anyone that this wasn’t a horror game. The brain begins to take in every tiny detail, every ounce of information. I’m glad I fought against for Gone Home because I can honestly say this game deserves every bit of it’s 9.5 IGN rating, if not more! I freeze up with paralyzing fear and refuse to play any further. But when it comes to actually playing horror/thriller games I cannot do it. I’m fascinated by the way a film or game can send the human brain into “fight or flight” mode through a medium that cannot hurt you and usually has to do with situations that are entirely fictional.
